The focus of the studio visit is on Theresa Schubert’s artistic practice and an exchange about the negative ecological effects of digital applications. This includes, for example, the increasing spread of artificial intelligence, which leads to an enormous overproduction of data.

With the rapid increase in digitalisation, awareness of the effects of our digital actions is needed more than ever. It is too easy to forget the climate-damaging effects of the necessary infrastructure due to the appealing design of new technologies and the suggested limitlessness of the internet.

An insight into Theresa Schubert’s work and a discussion with the artist will provide a vivid approach to this abstract topic. It is important to reflect on both the individual digital footprint and the structural dimension, such as the carbon footprint of large tech companies.

Together with the audience, we would like to reflect on possible productive and more sustainable forms of digital behaviour. The event ties in with the long-term, multi-perspective COPY PASTE WASTE programme at Prater Digital, which deals with digital sustainability and art.

About the artist
Dr Theresa Schubert is a Berlin-based artist, researcher and curator who explores unconventional visions of nature, technology and the self. She holds a PhD in Media Art from the Bauhaus University Weimar. In her practice, she combines audiovisual and hybrid media to create conceptual and immersive installations and performances. This includes organic matter and living organisms, algorithms and artificial intelligence, which become part of the artwork not only as material but also as meaningful co-creators. She also works with immersive video environments and 3D laser scanning to question modes of perception and explore the relationship between person and machine in hyper-technical societies, where the divide between nature and culture seems to be dissolving in the digital world.

Theresa Schubert’s work has been honoured with several international awards. She has been supported by various artist-in-residence programmes and her art works have been exhibited internationally. In addition to her artistic activities, she works as a visiting professor, co-editor and curator. Theresa Schubert is a member of the Berlin artists’ network SALOON, the medienkunstverein Berlin.

The event takes place within the Berlin Science Week 2024.
