The Prater Galerie in Kastanienallee in Prenzlauer Berg, one of the best-known and most vibrant quarters of the Pankow district, is a non-commercial venue for communicating and imparting contemporary art. It adopts an attitude of curiosity to new artistic positions and issues, and is open to a broad public. Because of the renovation of the historic Berlin Prater, the gallery has temporarily suspended operations and will reopen in 2025. As a communal gallery, it operates as part of the Department of Art and Culture within the Pankow District Authority’s Office of Further Education and Culture of Berlin.

The prospect of the reopening of the Prater in 2021 offered a unique opportunity to reinvent a communal cultural institution within the Pankow district, at a central location in Prenzlauer Berg. The Department of Art and Culture at the Pankow District Authority’s Office of Further Education and Culture appointed an advisory committee of external experts to advise on the thematic focus of the Prater, and the committee developed fundamental principles together at comprehensive workshops held in 2019.
Particularly heartfelt thanks are due to the advisory committee for its many productive discussions, valuable impulses and generous willingness to engage with the open Prater process.
Participants were:
Boris Abel, artist and cultural mediator
Wibke Behrens, Koalition Freie Szene, nGbK (New Society for Visual Arts), Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft
