As a formative photographer and non-conformist GDR citizen, Harald Hauswald focussed in particular on people, everyday situations and events in his images. People in the Prater presents a selection of his dynamic photographs from the 1980s and 1990s, taken in and around the Prater – the centre of attraction for a broad public who came to celebrate, dance and relax. His black-and-white images are accompanied by an essay by photo historian Laura Benz, which provides insight into Hauswald’s artistic work. While Hauswald’s pictures are an homage to the people in the Prater, Benz makes it clear that the photographer’s access to the venue was not self-evident, due to his politically critical stance.
People in the Prater, with photography by Harald Hauswald and an essay by Laura Benz, is a publication in the ‘Prater Perspektiven’ series.
