Menschen im Prater

As a formative photographer and non-conformist GDR citizen, Harald Hauswald focussed in particular on people, everyday situations and events in his images. People in the Prater presents a selection of lively photographs from the 1980s and 1990s taken in and around the venue, which shows itself as a centre of attraction for a varying public, celebrating, dancing and relaxing. The black and white images are accompanied by an essay by photo historian Laura Benz. Its combination provides an insight into Hauswald’s artistic work: his pictures being a homage to the people in the Prater, while Benz makes it clear that the photographer’s access to the venue was – due to his critical position of the political system – not self-evident.

People in the Prater with photography by Harald Hauswald and an essay by Laura Benz is a publication in the ‘Prater Perspektiven’ series to mark the occasion of the reopening of the Berlin Prater and the municipal Prater Galerie after extensive renovations. The publication will be presented as part as the opening celebrations in 2025.
