Vom Prater aus

Do you remember a night of dancing till dawn at the Bastard Club, an entertaining evening at the theater in the Pratersaal, or an unforgettable visit to Laura Kikauka’s flamboyant Schmalzwald? Did you stay overnight at Hotel Prora during Christoph Schlingensief’s Chance 2000 election campaign? Or do your memories of the Berlin Prater go back even further? Did any of you watch classic films at the DEFA cinema on Kastanienallee in the 1960s, or even help out as a volunteer in the late 1950s during the renovation of the Prater garden?

As diverse and colorful as the Berlin Prater’s program has always been, so varied and unique are the memories associated with it. To ensure that these singular stories are not lost over time, we want to collect and publish them in the online archive Vom Prater aus. Everyone is warmly invited to contribute their personal experiences—texts and images alike—to this living archive.

In addition to visitors’ individual memories, the archive website also brings together the most important historical events of the Berlin Prater, from its beginnings nearly 200 years ago to the present day. Here you can read about how a garden restaurant outside the city gates developed into one of Berlin’s most popular and culturally rich venues.

The illustrated chronicle featuring historical photographs is available not only in German and English, but also in German Sign Language and Easy Language.
