Kieztreffen Pankow is an open alliance of tenants and housing communities from Pankow and Prenzlauer Berg who organise against displacement and gentrification in the neighbourhood. In their meetings, networking and information exchange take place around topics such as: the municipality’s right to preemptively buy housing put up for private sale (‘Vorkaufsrecht’); tenancy termination due to owner’s wish to take over a flat (‘Eigenbedarfskündigungen’); vacancies; or the discontinuation of municipal subsidies for the social housing stock in the district. In addition, networking with other initiatives in the city, such as Stop Heimstaden or Deutsche Wohnen Enteigenen, also takes place there.
The founding of the neighbourhood meeting was accompanied by ‘Vorkaufsrecht’ being successfully applied to three housing buildings in the district, not least due to strong networks between the affected housing communities and the support of numerous individuals and initiatives. But the need here is far greater. In 2020, ‘Vorkaufsrecht’ was only successfully exercised in three cases out of 84. Also, the discontinuation of socially subsidised housing and the resulting jump in rents will affect more than 120 housing buildings in northern Prenzlauer Berg alone. Kieztreffen Pankow is currently collecting statistics and ongoing cases of terminations of rental contracts for owner-occupied flats, as well as terminations that have already taken place.
Kieztreffen is an initiative that grew from the Initiative Mieter:innengewerkschaft Berlin (Initiative Berlin Tenants’ Union), Mieterforum Pankow and the network against Heimstaden. The neighbourhood meeting is always held on the last Saturday of the month, and is open to all interested tenants. For the duration of gegen\archive: wer bleibt wo, ACUD Galerie is available for the neighbourhood meeting.
